Tsavo East National Park is 333km south-east of Nairobi and 173km north-west of Mombasa. Its relative closeness to the beaches and tourist attractions around Malindi and Mombasa make it an ideal one-day wildlife safari destination for those who want to stay overnight. Tsavo West National Park is a natural area of flat, dry plains, with thorny bushes and swampy marshland near the river. It is teeming with diverse Kenyan animals including large families of giraffes, gazelles, hartebeests, and zebras, as well as the “Big Five” must-see animals – buffalo, African elephants, lions, rhinos and leopards. Tsavo West is known for its Red-coloured Elephants, which love to dust bathe in the red colored soil. The park has many interesting geological features due to volcanic activity. The park is massive and the wildlife is spread out, so you will need to take some time to see the wildlife and fully appreciate this national park. Walking safaris are a great way to take in the beautiful savannah scenery as well as see the Shetani Lava flow. This is estimated to have been from an eruption 200 years ago. It covers an area of 50km square and has interesting caves to explore such as the Shetani Cave. Boating safaris are offered on Lake Jipe and for the adventurous traveler, rock climbing can be arranged at Tembo Peak. Mombasa is a coastal city of Kenya along the Indian Ocean. The city is known as the white and blue city in Kenya. Its beachfront hotels appeal to travelers in search of sun, sand and surf, while its Arab, Indian and colonial European heritage makes for a wide variety of sights to see. This cosmopolitan tourist hub is actually an island connected by bridges and ferries to the Kenyan coast. Stretching for miles along the mainland to the north and south, Mombasa’s beach resorts preside over palm-studded strands fringed by shimmering coral reefs. Tourists from all around the world and beyond flock here to enjoy the many things to do – from dolphin spotting trips on traditional dhows and deep-sea fishing to diving and snorkeling the wrecks and reefs and basking on the sun-splashed shores. But in the city itself, on the bustling island, a world of history and culture awaits.
